International Engagement
The International School is located in downtown Portland and is a private pre-K to 5th grade elementary school which has language tracks in Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. The school gives more financial aid than almost any other private school in the area according to an Oregonian article. Students in a Senior Capstone worked with the Director of Marketing at the International School to enhance the training for their teachers, to survey the Portland community about the International School, to target specific markets for the school, to overhaul the school's advertising materials such as brochures and the website and to create a more focused funnel from initial contact to enrollment. The new webpage follows many of the students' formal recommendations.
PSU Canadian Studies, in alliance with the Canadian Consulate-Seattle, sponsors an annual week of topical panels, lecture and film events related to Canada. All are open and advertised to the public. The week also provides an occasion for Canadian Studies faculty from all over the Pacific Northwest to gather for a luncheon coordinated by PSU International Studies.
Wayo Women's University and Portland State University agree to encourage education cooperation between the students and faculty at both universities.
Housed within the Center for Academic Excellence, the Student Leaders for Service (SLS) program intentionally builds students' leadership capacity to serve and learn with nonprofit organizations in the Portland metropolitan area. Students Leaders enroll in a three-term course, commit to nine months of direct service (five to ten hours per week) at a community organization linking with their personal academic and career goals, and receive a small stipend. Student Leaders serve as a key link between the University and the community, making manifest PSU's motto: Let Knowledge Serve the City.
The Jessie F. Richardson Foundation seeks to create solutions to address specific problems such as the lack of cultural appropriate training materials in Spanish, research the most prevalent problems with regulatory compliance, and sponsor specially designed wellness programs for direct care workers working with the elderly; share knowledge through production of papers and reports, providing technical assistance related to housing and long-term care, and dissemination of training materials for professionals and para-professionals; and build relationships through collaboration with other organizations to leverage available assistance, providing meaningful opportunities to volunteer in the United States and abroad, and expanding networks of professionals to act as mentors in developing countries. SLS members have assisted by providing English-Spanish translation services and recruiting additional PSU student volunteers.
