Portland State's Value to the Community

Portland State students provide almost $21 million of in-kind service activity annually through formal, community-based learning courses.

This monetary calculation is based on the Independent Sector's 2004 valuation of volunteer time in Oregon at $15.71/hour. Based on our Spring, 2006 survey of service hours, we estimate Portland State students contribute approximately 1,332,589 community service hours per year x $15.71/hour = $20,934,973 annually.

This value does not include significant co-curricular student group activity, nor account in any way for the additional significant value Portland State faculty and staff provide in community service.
